Shipping an Auto Need to ship an automobile? Auto imports and exports worldwide. Containers 20 ft and 40 ft "sole use" containers with only your vehicle(s) in the container, can be shipped to most major ports worldwide. This involves your car being secured within the container with straps and wheel chocks to hold it in place. You pay for the sole use of the container. (Your household goods may be combined with your auto in the same container). To regular destinations, including Australian and New Zealand ports, Canada, UK and European ports, South Africa, Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia, there is a more affordable option called "shared container services". Your car is loaded into the container, and a wood wall is custom-built around it to protect your vehicle in transit. You pay only for the space taken up within the container which your vehicle and the "wall" occupy. The rest of the container is then loaded with other goods (baggage, personal and household effects , and furniture) until full. Ocean Going RO-RO Car Ferry Select destinations are also served by ocean going roll on-roll off car ferry services. These vessels are primarily used by manufacturers to deliver brand new vehicles around the world. Cars are protected from the elements and are secured within enclosed car decks, by "tie down straps" and chocks. The service on these ships are not as frequent as container vessels, but there can be significant cost savings on some selected routes. Conventional Shipping Another method of shipping is "conventional" shipment. Your vehicle is carried on deck (not always protected from the elements), or within the hold of the vessel. There are obvious drawbacks in conventional shipping and we do not recommend this method of shipment if other shipping options are available. However, conventional shipment is very cost effective to certain destinations, where container and RO-RO services are not available.
